Tasmania, AustraliaTasmania, Australia is one of those unique places in the world that should be visited by every tourist. Tasmania is an island state situated of the south east coast of Australia. Hobart is the capital and is situated on the banks of the Derwent River and below Mt Wellington. Hobart is a modern city with plenty of old world history. It is a relaxed city with many old sandstone buildings, especially around Salamanca place and Constitution dock. This waterfront area in the centre of town becomes host to the celebrations at the end of each annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race with all the contestants rafted together within the dock. In the north you will find the city of Launceston and the magnificent Tamar River valley. Take a cruise on the river and visit Cataract gorge which is nearby. Not far away in the north east lies the ski field on Ben Lomond and some of the mountain scenery, waterfalls and forests must be seen to be believed. The west coast and wilderness areas are world famous and quite spectacular. The towns of Queenstown, Zeehan and Strahan should be on every tourist's itinerary and it is essential to take a cruise visiting Macquarie harbour and areas like the Gordon and Franklin rivers. This region features dense rainforests, dominated by the ancient Huon Pine, mighty rivers, wonderful waterfalls, windswept coastline, beautiful lakes and harbours and much of it is world heritage listed. Extended overnight cruises are also available and is an experience to be remembered for ever. In Tasmania's midlands you will find the true country ambience of this wonderful state. The heritage highway runs between Launceston and Hobart and passes through many old world country villages. The region is dotted with historic homes, churches and buildings and the countryside full of verdant pastures. Some of the mountain areas in the midlands are must see destinations with areas like Cradle Mountain and its lake being one of Tasmania's icons. There is also a huge and very interesting hydro electric power scheme through the region and its many lakes and rivers are full of fat trout and salmon. The south east is home to much of the history surrounding Tasmania's convict past. The Tasman peninsular is home to Port Arthur and Eaglehawk Neck. Here lie the ruins of the states convict past. Old jails, churches and other historic buildings provide the traveler with a real insight into the life of the original settles and it is easy to imagine the hardships under which they all lived. This area is also famous for its wildlife and you can visit the Tasmanian Devil Park or reptiles at the world Tiger Snake Centre at Tarrana. There are also some fascination natural attractions in the area which include the Tessellated pavement, Blowhole, Devils Kitchen, Tasman Arch and the Remarkable Cave.
