Mackay is the commercial center of the Whitsundays region. It is a thriving modern city which services the huge mining industries to the west as well as the holiday and resort islands of the magnificent Whitsunday passage to the north east. Mackay has a busy domestic airport with lots of regular flights from both the north of the state and southern capitals. It has a strong accommodation sector and with plenty of commercial customers as well as tourists entering the Whitsunday region through Mackay it is always super busy. Mackay has a large port and the coal loading facility at Hay Point is one of the largest in the world. It is common to see up to 100 bulk carriers anchored off Mackay, waiting to load. There is also an excellent marina facility to cater for all the charter boats that ply the local waters.
Mackay is one of the best places along the Queensland coast to embark on a fishing charter as the local waters are prolific. You can choose from a day charter, extended live aboard charter to the outer reef or even sports fishing for Barramundi in the local dams and impoundments. The slipway facility and hardstand area cater for most of the charter fleet from the Whitsunday Islands.
Mackay accommodation consists mostly of excellent motel and hotel style properties and there are also several great resorts along the northern beaches. To the west in the Eungella National Park, you will find magnificent rainforests with fantastic views. The rivers are home to Australia’s famous platypus and if you are patient and prepared to spend a little time waiting you will be rewarded by a sighting. There are also some great places to stay in the region and this Mackay travel guide will help you to find your way around.
Mackay can be reached by air, rail or coach and is a popular stopover point for travellers on the Bruce Highway.
