Family accommodation in the Whitsundays is available at all standards from Budget, right through to five star. The Whitsunday region consists of two main parts. The first is the mainland with apartments, resorts and hotels available in both Mackay and Airlie Beach. In the many islands that make op the Whitsunday Passage, there are numerous Island resorts, most of which cater for family groups and Hamilton Island accommodation is reputed to be among the best. Many families also like to hire a sailing boat for a week or so and they use the boat as their accommodation.
Mackay, at the southern end of the Whitsundays region, has a number of resorts on the beachfront on the north side of town. These make excellent family accommodation as they have restaurants, great swimming pools and all the advantages of a beachfront location. Holiday accommodation is also available in one of the many motels in Mackay. In Airlie beach there is a huge range of family accommodation. The luxury end of the family accommodation market is well catered for with several high class new apartment style resorts. The middle market is huge with plenty of apartments on offer. Most Airlie beach accommodation has fantastic water views as the majority is built on the hill overlooking the town and the ocean.
The island resorts nearly all have special facilities and offers for families. Nearly all have free use of non motorised watercraft so the kids can play all day at the beach and use the surf skis and catamarans. Kids stay, play and eat free policies are common among the Whitsunday island resorts and many have plenty of organised activities and kids clubs to keep them entertained. Hamilton Island is the largest of the resorts that has special family packages and it also has plenty of family style accommodation in self catering apartments and holiday homes. Daydream Island and Long Island also participate in these types of offers.
