Just off the Townsville coastline sits beautiful Magnetic Island. This island was named by Captain James Cook as he explored the east coast of Australia and found that his magnetic compass was affected by an anomaly as he passed by the island. Today, Magnetic Island is not only a suburb of Townsville, but it is also a holiday destination for many people who live in the hinterland of Townsville and like to spend their weekends fishing, diving, playing golf and generally relaxing in an idyllic seaside paradise.

Magnetic Island is connected to Townsville via a fast catamaran ferry, as well as a large vehicular ferry, which allows residents and tourists alike to take their vehicles to and fro, from the island when it is required. The island has several small towns that are located close to the best beaches and tourist destinations on the island. Nelly Bay is on the inshore side of the island and is where the old ferry used to dock before the boat harbour was constructed. There is a great beach and the old ferry wharf now serves as the ideal place for holiday makers to throw in a line and do a little fishing. The esplanade has a number of shops and restaurants as well as lots of holiday accommodation. This mainly comes in the form of holiday apartments.

On the ocean side of the island is Horse shoe Bay and this is where you will find the best beach on the island. It has stinger nets to protect swimmers as well as lots of hire equipment including paddle skis and jet skis. Once again, the esplanade is the place to find great restaurants and cafes as well as galleries and excellent accommodation. The best accommodation on Magnetic Island is at the boat harbour on the southern side of the island. Here you will find two beautiful new apartment style resorts that are very popular with tourists. They are Mantra “One Bright Point” and Peppers “Blue on Blue Resort” Both have beautiful four star accommodation and have frontage onto the boat harbour and marina complex. They have excellent restaurants and on site management.

Magnetic Island is one of the most popular coastal island holiday destinations in North Queensland.
