One of the best island resorts on the North Queensland coast is Green Island. The resort keeps a high standard of both accommodation and service and the restaurant, cafes and other attractions and activities are all well organized. The resort is rated at five stars and only caters to a relatively small number of guests. The island itself is a coral cay that is part of the Great Barrier Reef system and large numbers of overnight guests would put an unacceptable pressure on the ecological systems that the resort manages to reduce its footprint on the local ecosystems.
Green Island was one of the first reef destinations for day visitors and its history goes back for generations. It had one of the first underwater observatories which you can still use today and it is situated on the wharf where the current day tour boats berth for the day. Glass bottom boats tours take customers on a trip around the best parts of the reef here and there is also a dive shop and dive charters to other nearby reefs are also available. Green Island is one of the closest coral cays on the reef to the mainland coast and is also just a short trip out from Cairns. Many tour operators from Cairns use Green Island and nearby Michaelmas Cay as day tour destinations.
Because of its proximity to Cairns, many visitors fly into Cairns from other Australian ports and from International destinations and are able to spend their first night in the region staying right on the reef itself. There are plenty of other things to see here as well. The island is a seabird nesting haven and a number of species come here annually to nest and raise their young. Green Island is also an important turtle nesting destination and Green turtles, Loggerhead turtles and several other species also use the local beaches to breed.
Green Island is one of the easiest places to get to on the Great barrier reef and also supplies some of the best quality accommodation.
