The Fraser Coast is one of Australia’s fastest growing tourism and residential regions. It encompasses the area from Rainbow Beach to Burrum Heads and takes in all of the Great Sandy Straits and Fraser Island. The region is also known as the Great Sandy region and most of it is World Heritage listed. The largest population center is the City of Hervey Bay which has a population of around 60000 and is the fastest growing city in the country. The region is blessed with many natural assets that attract tourists from around the world.
Fraser Island is a unique environment. This is the only place in the world where rain forests grow in sand. Some of its trees are unique to the island. The Satinay is a member of the eucalypt family and grows to massive proportions. The timber produced from it is the hardest on the planet and almost impervious to marine borers and worms. It was greatly prized for wharf and bridge construction and was even used to line the banks of the Suez Canal when it was built. No further logging takes place on Fraser Island it is all returning to its natural state. Fraser Island is also famous for its magnificent fresh water lakes. These come in two distinct types. The window lake forms where the water table on the island breaks through the surface. These types of lake feature pure white sand and crystal clear water. The best example is Lake MacKenzie. There are also a number of perched lakes and these are formed when rotting vegetation forms an impervious barrier preventing water from seeping into the sand and a lake is formed above it. There are many of these on the island. The water is usually Titree stained however the water is still pure.
The rainforest areas on Fraser Island are superb. Central Station and The Yidney Scrub forests are visited by tours every day and the crystal clear streams like Wangoolba Creek are magnificent places to visit. The Fraser Coast is also lucky to be visited by thousands of Humpback Wales every year during their northern migration. Hervey Bay tourism operators have developed the best venue in the world for taking tourist out to see the whales. Around a dozen boats operate daily from the Urangan Boat harbour during the months of July to early November. The Fraser Coast has its own airport near Urangan that has direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane and there is excellent accommodation to be found on the Hervey bay esplanade. There are a number of excellent resorts to choose from.
